Ploumilliau means "parish of Saint-Milliau", king of "Domnonée" in 6th century. During his reign (? - 531), he restored peace, developed agriculture and helped poorest.

Inside of the Church, a wooden skeleton (1640) represents "Ankou", the figure of Death in Brittany. The famous writer, Anatole Le Braz, who spent his childhood in Ploumilliau, evokes this character in the "Legends of Death" (this French book is available in the gite).

With its many trades, Ploumilliau is a flourishing and dynamic little town where life is beautiful. The gite is only 500 m from the church.

Thz history of our house

The house is mentioned in the " General Inventory of the Monuments and the Artistic Heritage of France", Ploumilliau, the domestic and agricultural architecture (study carried out in 2004 by Mr P. Pichouron of the Conseil General of Côtes-d'Armor).

Gouéliou (Gouelioù, Gouelou) means "the sails".

The house is an old flax farm. The manufacture and spinning of flax was widespread in the Trégor at the beginning of 20th century. Today, in the garden of gîte, a granite trough with a drainage hole (douet) testifies to the prescence of a small retting pit (poul lin), supplied from a clear water spring. The flax stalks were deposited there in order to separate the fibres from the bark (retting). This was the first of many stages in the preparation of the flax, such as stripping, spinning, for finally weaving the cloth into articles such as shirts or sails.

The oldest construction dates from the 17th C. The three letters JHS (Jesus Hominum Salvator) are engraved on the granite corner stone, which according to the tradition of the first half of the 18th C would have been the first stone to be laid. The letter H form the cross on which Jesus was martyred.

Decoration

The gîte is an old stable, we have kept the old granite troughs which were once mangers for the horses.

The gîte is decorated with the work of local artists and craftsmen.
